GRANGEVILLE: William “Bill” Smythe, 80 of Grangeville passed away December 28, 2010 at the Grangeville Health and Rehab Center. He was born 1930 in St. Louis, Missouri and was a Korean War Veteran serving 6 years in the Army. Upon discharge he made Washington State his home where he acquired his A & P Mechanics license and worked for 37 years in the commercial air line business, retiring from Delta Air Lines. Before and after retirement he enjoyed is hobbies; restoring old Mustangs and military vehicles, riding horses, and volunteering many hours to Washington State Parks and US Forest Service in Central Washington. After moving to Grangeville 5 years ago, he thought it was the perfect place to finish out retirement in such a friendly community.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Charlotte, brother, Jim and two sisters, Lucille and Mary Alice.
Bill was a very devoted husband; married 41 years and a loving father to his two children.
He is survived by his wife Diane, two children, (son) Steve and wife Maria, and (daughter) Jan, three grandchildren Tera, Jay, and Janae, two great grandchildren, Alyssa and Anthony, two sisters Rose of Missouri, June of Florida and brother Bob of Missouri.
A Veterans service and celebration of life is being planned for mid-April. In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to your local VFW to honor Bill’s patriotism and service to our country.
