Roy Green, Jr. 87, of Grangeville, passed away Thursday, December 24, 2009, at a Lewiston care center.
Roy was born October 31, 1922 at Spokane Falls, Washington, a son of Roy and Anna Conway Green. They lived in several places before moving to Grangeville. Roy attended Grangeville schools, graduating from Grangeville High School where he was an outstanding athlete playing football and basketball. His senior year in high school he received the American Legion Award and was offered scholarships to play football at both the University of Idaho and Washington State University.
Following his education he farmed with his father before being drafted into the U.S. Army during the Korean War. After his discharge from the Army he returned to Grangeville and continued farming. He married Irmalee Cone on June 15, 1949 at Grangeville. He formed R. Green & Sons, Inc. in 1977 and farmed near Grangeville.
He loved farming. He was also a pilot and a former partner in Grangeville Air Service. He was a charter member of the Grangeville Elks Lodge, a member of Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church, and was a former county road commissioner.
He is survived by his wife, Irmalee, at their family home in Grangeville; his sons, Patrick and his wife Carmen of Grangeville, Jon and his wife Dr. Monita Green of Ukiah, California, and Rick Green of Grangeville. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Patrick, Angela and Laura, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, James.
A vigil service will be held Wednesday, December 30, 2009, at 9:30 a.m., at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Grangeville, followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:00 a.m. also at the church. Burial will follow at Prairie View Cemetery in Grangeville. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 29, from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the Blackmer Funeral Home in Grangeville.
