LEWISTON: Leona Mae Koole passed away on Saturday, October 28, 2006 at St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center in Lewiston. Leona was born at the top of the Kooskia Tram Way at Winona, Idaho on August 11, 1918 to William E. and Maggie A. (Hemphill) Schlieper. Her father ran the Tram Way Station where the Camas Prairie farmers hauled their crops. She grew up on Tahoe Ridge and Red Fir out of Kooskia.
Leona and Leendert (Len) Koole were married on March 9, 1944, in the farm house where Len’s parents farmed near Grangeville. They spent their early married life in Alberta, Canada where they farmed for four and a half years, after buying the Homestead farm of Len’s parents, at Monarch. After leasing out the Monarch farm, they moved back to the USA, arriving November 11th, 1948, and leased Len’s parents Grangeville farm. In the years of raising her family, Leona was active in her Church, where she taught Sunday School for many years. She was a Blue Bird leader, a Cub Scout leader and a Cancer Society volunteer. She loved to have family and friend gatherings where she served many meals for them. She loved to cook, sew, crocheting and embroidery. She loved gardening and her flowers.
She is survived by her husband Len of Lewiston, two children Deborah A.Carrell of Boise, and Arie L. Koole of Grangeville, five grand children and one great grandchild. She was proceeded in death by her parents and her brothers Melvin, Bill, and Kennith and a sister Syble.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, November 2, 2006 at 10:00 a.m. at the Blackmer Funeral Home, Grangeville. Pastor Harold Gott of the Grangeville Christian Church will officiate. Private inurnment will be held at Prairie View Cemetery. The family suggests memorial contributions may be made to the Grangeville Christian Church Building Fund.
