John J. Kopczynski, 99

John J. Kopczynski, 99 of Grangeville died Monday, November 28, 2011 at the Grangeville Health and Rehab. Center.

 John was born April 23, 1912 at Comox, British Columbia, Canada, a son of August and Magdalena Seubert Kopczynski.  He moved to Cottonwood as a young boy where he grew up and graduated from Cottonwood High School in 1930.  Following his education he worked at a saw mill in Keuterville.  He married Nancy E. Tustin in 1935 and they lived in Cottonwood where he purchased a bakery and learned the baking industry.  In 1952 they moved to Grangeville and purchased Mary Ann’s Bakery and changed the name to Joseph’s Bakery.  During this time he perfected his craft of making doughnuts and became an expert in cake decorating and was known world wide for his German Fruit Cake and Egg Nog recipes.  He sold the bakery in 1973.  In 1975 he was elected as an Idaho County Commissioner and served until the late 1980’s.  His wife Nancy died in 1985.  He was a true entrepreneur having several successful businesses in the area. 

 He was a devout Roman Catholic, and was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church and enjoyed singing in the church choir.  He was also a member of the Elk Lodge.

 He is survived by his son, John J. Kopczynski, Jr. of Spirit Lake, Idaho, 5 grandchildren, several great grandchildren.  He is also survived by a sister, Doreen Jacobs of Ellensburg, WA and many nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by 2 grandchildren and 11 brothers and sisters.

 A visitation will be held Friday, December 2, 2011 from 2:00 to 4:30 at the Blackmer Funeral Home, Grangeville.  A rosary will be recited Friday, December 2, 2011 at 5:30 at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church.  A traditional requiem Mass will be held Saturday, December 3, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Keuterville with burial to follow at Prairie View Cemetery, Grangeville.  Family suggests memorial contributions may be made to the Carmelite Monastery of Jesus, Mary and Joseph, 430 Monastery Rd.
