Gertrude Vanderwall, 89

Gertrude (Gert) Vanderwall, 89, of Grangeville passed away Tuesday, November 17, 2009 at her home in Grangeville.

 

She was born August 20, 1920 in Lynden, Washington to John and Dena Otter. Gert grew up in Lynden and graduated from Lynden Christian High School in 1938.

 

She married Marion Vanderwall on November 1, 1946 in Lynden. They made their home on the Camas Prairie where they farmed and raised three children. Gert lived in her much loved home until the time of her death.

 

Gert was very active in her community and hers was a familiar face at American Cancer Society meetings and events. She was also a volunteer with the Syringa General Hospital Auxiliary where she held various offices and helped with many fundraising activities.

 

She enjoyed the sport of bowling until the age of 77 and looked forward to spending time with her friends at the monthly “neighborhood club”.  Gert and Marion enjoyed traveling to warmer climates until her health declined.

 

Family was most important to Gert and spending time with her husband, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren brought much joy to her life. Her dry sense of humor was a source of delight and amusement for family and friends.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Mina Polinder and Dorothy Otter, brother John Otter. Her daughter in law Mary passed away in January, 2003. Her son Terry passed away in January, 2008.

 

Survivors include her husband Marion at the family home; son Randy (Jean) Vanderwall of Grangeville; daughter Kristi (Jake) Jacobsen of Missoula, MT; Grandsons Mark (Jessica) Vanderwall of Grangeville and Jason (Joanna) Vanderwall of Lolo, MT; Great grandchildren: Jacob, Bailey, and Addisyn of Grangeville and Beniah and Caleb of Lolo, MT. She is also survived by step-grandchildren Sandi Sandry , Kim Herzog, Stacie Cline and their husbands and children.

 

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 21 at 1 pm at the Grangeville Christian Church with Reverend Harold Gott officiating. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery near Grangeville.  Friends may call Friday, November 20 from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the Blackmer Funeral Home in Grangeville.
