GRANGEVILLE: Frederick A. Smith, 86 of Grangeville passed away Saturday, November 20, 2004 at the Grangeville Health and Rehabilitation Center.
He was born August 20, 1918 in Oswego, New York a son of Jesse and Anna Marie Holtz Smith. He attended school in Oswego before joining the CCC and worked at Coeur d’Alene in the late 1930’s. He joined the United States Army and served in the Asiatic, Pacific, European and Middle Eastern theatres as a sergeant. Following his discharge he worked as pipe fitter for Armstrong Cork Company in Fulton, New York for 34 years.
He married Julia Becker on June 14, 1950 at Baldwinsville, NY. Julia passed away in 1980 and he moved to Grangeville following her death.
He was a member of the Oswego County Comets Motorcycle Club in New York in the 1930’s and 1940’s.
Fred was a faithful dedicated husband, father, grandfather and friend to many. He cared about the needs of others and many times sacrificed his needs and reached out to others. He chose to follow Christ as his Lord and Savior early in his marriage through the ministry of Evangelist Billy Graham. He remained faithful to his conversion and became committed to a ministry of prayer, he prayed for his family and others regularly and continued to lead his family in his Christian faith until he left to be with the Lord.
He is survived by his son, Frederick J. and Debra Smith, daughters, Rachel and Robert Beeson, Roxanne and Jeff Heath all of Grangeville, 11 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren, a sister, Margaret Drews of Connecticut. He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. at the Grangeville Church of the Nazarene. Burial will follow at Prairie View Cemetery. Friends may call Tuesday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Blackmer Funeral Home, Grangeville.
