Dorothy Eileen Altman Carpenter, 82

Dorothy Eileen Altman Carpenter, 82, longtime resident of Lewiston and Grangeville, died Sunday, November 20, 2005 at the Life Care Center of Lewiston.

Dorothy was born July 11, 1923 to Fred W. and Edna Kivett Altman at their farm home in the Delaney District north of Grangeville. She attended Delaney Grade School for eight years and graduated from Grangeville High School in 1941. She worked in the Idaho County Courthouse for several years as a secretary in the County agent’s office. Dorothy received a BS degree in business education from University of Idaho in 1954 and a Master of Education degree in 1957 also from the University of Idaho. She taught high school Business one year at Clearwater Valley, two years at Genesee and twenty five years at Clarkston High School until her retirement in 1981.

Dorothy married Theodore Carpenter at Boise on June 11, 1979. They spent many enjoyable years traveling throughout the United States and into many foreign countries. They resided in Grangeville until Theodore passed away on March 26, 1999. Dorothy suffered a stroke in September 1999 and resided at Life Care Center until her death.

Dorothy was a member of the Methodist Church of Grangeville, Asotin County Retired Teachers, Delta Kappa Gamma and the Mizpah Rebekah Lodge #12.

She is survived by one step-daughter, Rosalyn Bentz and husband Rusty of Lewiston; step-sons Fred Carpenter and wife Dianna of Lewiston and Jeff Carpenter and wife Donna of Melissa, Texas; eight step-grandchildren; cousin Pershing Kief and Irene Altman of Atascadero, California; Sandra and Lynn Knowles also of Atascadero; Verla Hansen of Norwalk, California; Susan Altman of Amelia Island, Florida; Sharon Tyler of Aubrey, Texas; Marjorie and Gene Manring of Woodland, Washington and Katherine Butcher. Cousin Terry Altman preceded her in death.

The family suggests memorial donations may be made to a charity of your choice or United Methodist Church of Grangeville.

Funeral Services will be held on Monday, November 28, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. at the Blackmer Funeral Home, 305 N. Mill Street, Grangeville, with burial to follow at Prairie View Cemetery in Grangeville. Visitation will be held on Sunday, November 27 from 2:00-6:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Blackmer Funeral Home in Grangeville.
